Stray Pigeons

You find a pigeon carrying one or two rings on its leg... What to do?

The first reflex When a racing pigeon get lost and exhausted, the first reflex to have is to give it some food and some water to enable it to recover enough to continue on its way home.

What kind of food must been given? Wheat, corn, small seeds...or for lake some rice.
Avoid giving the bird bread which produces intestinal problems. To drink, only water. As soon as the weather will be better and after a couple of days rest, the racing pigeon will usually be able to fly home to its loft.

If it's not the case, follow the instructions below...

Have a look at the rings

Try to catch it and have a look on its legs:
The racing pigeon may carry one or two rings:
a.. only an identification number ring (with a number and a year, some letters for the native country)
b.. an identification number ring and another ring for the owner's adress (or racing association he belongs to)
c.. an identification number ring and a bigger ring which is used for electronic clocking (this one will give you no informations)

The french racing pigeons are due to carry two rings:

  • a.. one is the identification number ring (identification number, year of birth, native country) e.g: 623310 - FRANCE - 98 Warning: Not to be confused with the rubber race ring which is put onto the bird for racing purposes.
  • b.. the other one is an adress ring on which can be found:- either the adress of the association where the owner is registered,

    - either the personnal adress of the bird's owner, - either the owner's phone number.
If you can't'join the racing pigeon's owner, you can mail directly to FCF headquarters : lost@colombophiliefr.com

For the foreign racing pigeons ( Great-Britain, Belgium, Germany... ) the only ring that birds must carry is the identification number ring.
This ring, usually made of metal and covered with plastic is the same as used in France.
E.g: 3299166 NL 98, dutch racing pigeon born in 1998.
Some fliers put adress ring, but it's unusual. Sometimes the owner's adress or his phone number are printed on one of the wing's big feather.

If the bird does not carry adress ring or no indications on the wings, contact the association or union concerned (see list in this page) or give it to a flier.
